ISO 16602 - Protective clothing for protection against chemicals
ISO 16602:2007 establishes minimum performance levels, classification criteria, and labelling requirements for protective clothing intended to provide safety against chemical hazards. The scope of this standard covers a wide range of chemical protective garments, including fully encapsulating suits, liquid-tight and spray-tight suits, jackets, coveralls, sleeves, aprons, smocks, hoods, footwear covers, and trouser protectors. It defines how such clothing should be evaluated and categorized based on its protective performance.
Protection against airborne solid particles is addressed separately under ISO 13982-1, which is referenced within ISO 16602:2007. This standard does not apply to protection against solid chemicals in forms other than airborne particulates.
ISO 16602:2007 is intended to guide manufacturers by specifying essential requirements for testing, performance classification, and labelling of chemical protective clothing. In addition, it supports users by providing explanations of referenced test methods, guidance on hazard and risk assessment, and recommended performance classes for specific applications. The standard is not designed to cover every possible workplace scenario but serves as a structured framework for selecting and evaluating chemical protective clothing.
